And I said to the real estate lady, I said, Well, how do you know theres a ghost in there? She said, Because the old lady that originally lived in the house. He did so much work for you. Then I was down in Florida for a while and Im wondering, Well, what in the hell am I going to do in Florida? What was I? Are you still interested? And I said, Well, of course I am. Ill do that. So that was over in Port Richmondits still there, I understand, the store. And he asked me would I be interested in working for him out here on Staten Island. And thats where I had all this wonderful carved stuff from the Eskimos that they gave me. He spends time in every part of it. Burke - 1 - 2 and grew up 90% of my time on Staten Island until I became old enough and I joined the military. But before we know it, there wont be a thing left in the house. So I bought it. So a couple of days later, I have a dream. And she couldntthey couldnt keep up with it anymore. So then I said, well, what the hell am I gonna do? And that painting of me, thats upstairs in my bedroomdid you ever see it? What is a shame is some of the mansionsthe really, really ornate mansions that were torn down. First thing I started with was the basement because it had four-foot of water in it. And then I was able to get all my stuff out of storage and out of peoples homes where I stored them, and furnished the house and moved and lived in the whole house, took care of it. There was the main house, over here was the bar, over here was this big dining room, and this was the main house. Q: And, do you keep records on, on those kinds of things? I mean, we had clocks, baby-Ben clocks, hanging in apartments. And he said, George, Im selling my business. But the story that was cuteremember the lady in England, the antique dealer, that used to bring her bottles all the time? Because I certainlyI never passed up a bargain. And that was a couple people from Tottenville, caused all that. Oh god, that was a gorgeous mansion. Burke: Hawaii. . Q: Yes. Now theyre worth a couple hundred-dollars apiece. Daller: Well, you did at a certain point, because you have a lot of photos. George Burke is the restorer of the historic Seguine Mansion on the South Shore of Staten Island, where he has lived and taken care of the property for over four decades. Q: Today is November 9, 2021. Daller: No, I dont. Burke: Like a locket. And in the meantime, I made a couple of little investments and they turned out very well for me. Daller: But thats how he [referring to the painting of Mr. Seguine] came back to the house. Yes, of course, they could eat all the grass. That was Mrs., what was her name? Mrs. Mackey. Daller: We really cant give you any details on that. They tear down one house and build five. I, being the youngest, of course, seeing everybody growing up. That is the only thing that worries methat the house will be stripped. What was her name? But because I was military, the military shippedwhen they moved me, they moved all my stuff. Brother Bill? I loved them too. And I would just would go around and Id just pick stuff up. And they added this big dining room to the other side of the house. Im gonna save this house. Q: Did you keep up a conversation with Mario Buatta about. I mean, one year, the oil bill here was $11,000. Lets keep fighting it, because there was no way to fight. Daller: The stables. Before he left, the house was fine. And then, where they built the schoolwhat is that girls school up here? We just mentioned him. So that makes sense. I fixed it up. And I miss all those horses. So I went down in Rossville and I bought a beautiful, big old, rundown place and restored it completely. I bought another restaurant, didnt I? But, God, that was almost 100 years ago, you know? And he saw the way to help out, and I said, well form a board and what well do is well continue to have fundraisers in order to support the house, but we need additional help and support as well. That house, it was a big French mansard, big Victorian. And Im glad I did what I did, about just giving it to the National Historic Trust. I wanted to ask about the Equestrian Center. Burke: Oh, its in beautiful condition because the guy I told you, Jimmy Pistilli, he had it landmarked. But anyway, she said, No, Im not going in. Valhalla. Of course, over therewhen I was over thereEngland was just getting out of the bad part of the War [World War II], and they had nothing over there. Burke: Yes, but just think of that gorgeous, bigthe mansion that this was their farmhouse, up the street here, that was gorgeous. Remember him? And I was always a horse person. But I still have a lot of it. And they were going to pay for everything if they owned it. And that still is, today, one of the great places around here, the Old Bermuda Inn, and John still owns it. Q: So about this house, I wanted to ask about the Friends of the Seguine Mansion. Q: Can you give me an example of one of the things that you worked on together in the house? But the only thing was it was too small. So I got this on the front porch somewhere, nailed to the house, butdoesnt matter. And were doing this interview in Burkes home, in the Seguine Mansion on the South Shore of Staten Island. And she wanted to start running things and taking things over. I was always in the operating room or someplace like that. The walkway going to the beach, its still there, where the house was. And I said, Well, the smell is still there. And I said to her, Whatever happened to the old girl? And she said, Well, years ago, when she died, she said, she was laid out in the front parlor in the coffin, and it was nothing but lilacs. He said, What in the hell youre buying this old piece of shit for? He said, Is it insured? I said, Yes, I took big insurance on it. He said, Good. Probably. And as you see it today was from me doing all those little things. Thank you so much. Devoted father of Matthew I. Burke, Jason L. Burke, and Georgina. But things that, well, were thatyou needed carpenters that knew, that were good carpenters. Ill give you a job. They cant just say, The doors are open for anybody, just walk in! And it was one of those busy, busy, goddamn nights. Burke: And he was one of the top portrait painters in Madrid. What the hell is that coming from? So I come down the stairs, and as I got down the stairs, the spelling got stronger and stronger. That wasyou probably dont rememberthere was this great big factory right down here, built on the beach. And you can ask[gesturing to Daller], Daller: Everybody got something. Theyd work out, and theyd be waiters, or this and that. Burke: I dont find any difference living here. Its a big plaque on it, its landmarked and everything. Of course, I went to school here. They are Chinese Chippendale. I mean, its physically impossible. Burke: Oh, well, when I was inI guess I was in England. Burke: Well, I wanted a beautiful Victorian look. Q: When you were making those decisions about decorating, were you thinking about a particular style, like a historic style, that you were going for? As a young adult, he joined the U.S. Air Force and served in the medical department, spending time in locations across Europe and Alaska. And he died young. I mean, I could do a little woodwork, but I wasnt a carpenter. Q: So what was it like when you had the house finished and furnished? And Diane said, Oh, Marian has it.. Yes. I said, No, no, no. And the backyard is beautiful. In fact, my mother worked there. He worked by himself. They couldnt. If you are going to stay, you better do this this and this, whatever the hell it was. People, Oh, could you help me? And especially when I came to Staten Island and I was working for Sherwin Williams, andwhat the hell, Florence? But they tore the house down to build that school. Prince Edward Island. Because my house was right across the street from it. Daller: It was like, we cant even find him anymore. Yes, but it was weird. Q: Yes. Q: So those things that you got later on, afterthey didnt come from Europe. And after he died the family still lived like we had my fathers money involved. And I took the money. I slept in it, lived in it, ate in it. And if they only would have remained, they would have been a part of it, and everything could have been fully appreciated. See Photos. Burke: Well, most of the stuff in the house, he worked with me. Daller: So can you imagine a three room apartment filled to the brim with antiques? And on top of that, I still worked for Sherwin Williams. Daller: I mean, that big wrap-around porch that went all the way around the house. But big stuff like couches and chairs and that kind of thing. Daller: And when he wasnt doing that, he was horseback riding because he loved to ride and thats kind of segued himself to the Seguine House and to Bess. Burke: Yes. And Im looking at looking at it and I said, You know, thats the last house. And then, it was declared unsafe, and they come in and knocked it down. Lookit, I saved the police station and the two buildings next to the police station. They even stopped you riding in the parks. But it doesnt work that way. And so I had all that stuff in my apartment. And I renovated the bar, I renovated the other side, my two sisters came to work for me, running the kitchen and the dining room. But he did a lot of the work for you. Im no bulldozer!. And if I couldnt take care of them, Id call down to the base and theyd send a helicopter and theyd pick them up and take them down to the hospital, because we had to take care of them, because Alaska was ours, and all the Eskimos was our responsibility.
